Cheddar Valley candidates Graham Godwin-Pearson and Jeff Savage have welcomed the news that a Conservative administration in the new Somerset Council will complete the Strawberry Line.
The commitment appeared in the Party's manifesto for Somerset, launched earlier today.
Graham and Jeff made plain their views on better walking and cycling routes, as well as public transport, a few months ago and in February, Sedgemoor Conservatives earmarked £50,000 in the council budget to investigate the extension.
The Strawberry Line currently runs between Yatton and Cheddar and the proposals are for the route to extend to Draycott and connect up ultimately to Shepton Mallet via Wells.
Graham says, "Currently, many communities in Somerset would be cut off if it weren't for their cars and for the foreseeable future, we need to account for that. Using a car is a personal choice.
"However, multi-user paths that allow people to walk, cycle or even ride a horse, should they wish, are essential amenities for any community. Walking and cycling for pleasure are recreational must-haves, which is why we fully support the plans to complete the Strawberry Line, as well as other paths, such as the one between Axbridge and Cross, on which we are also working.
"Long term, some people may choose to use these routes to go to work and to school and we must build these facilities so that people have the choice."
