Nearly 300 trees will be planted in village hall gardens, crematoriums, parks and public spaces across Sedgemoor, where they will be enjoyed and cherished by residents for years to come – thanks to Sedgemoor District Council’s Tree Fund.
During the summer, SDC asked town and parish councils if they would like to order free trees for planting, which included whips as well as small, medium and large-sized trees as well as established oak trees. Twenty organisations took up Sedgemoor’s offer and are gearing up to plant the trees over the coming months during the tree-planting season. While small trees are very important, it is vital that there are enough large trees that will be long-lasting and benefit our local environment, as well as to local people, for years to come.
It is hoped that many councils will plant their trees during National Tree Week, which takes place from Saturday, 27th November – Sunday, 5th December.
Councillor Janet Keen, Portfolio holder for Communities said, “It is fantastic that our local partners applied for so many trees to plant. It just shows that working together, at a local level, can achieve so much for our environment and communities. We have also had a really good response to our Environmental Champion scheme, where individuals or organisations can join up and help us towards our target of carbon neutral by 2030.
