After a great deal of planning and logistics work, Cheddar, Axbridge and Shipham households will be able to recycle more items from the kerbside later this month (February).
As part of their weekly collection, the recycling teams are dropping the new blue bags off at all households in the area in advance of the change, in which food and drink cartons, TetraPak, plastic trays, batteries and small electrical appliances will be collected in addition to the normal recyclable items.
All households should also receive a leaflet with all of the information, including the start date for Recycle More and the required changes to weekly collection days.
Cllr Graham Godwin-Pearson, who has been campaigning for more kerbside recycling for years, says, "Recycle More has been a long time coming, and I'm delighted that it's finally upon us. Somerset is already a leading authority for recycling and the ability to put more items out on the kerb each week will only strengthen that position further.
"I've always been enthusiastic about recycling, writing to retailers, supermarkets and distributors, raising the issue in public meetings and most recently working with Sedgemoor on Recycle More, as well as recycling everything I can at home. It's one of the simplest ways in which we can all do our bit for the environment.
"Please look out for the leaflet and keep it somewhere safe. Together, we have an impact on reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill."
From the start date advertised in your leaflet, the recycling containers will be used as follows:-
- Your existing black box will contain paper and cardboard
- Your existing green box will be used for glass and food cartons, including TetraPak
- The new blue bags will be used for plastic bottles, pots, tubs, as well as tins, foil and aerosols.
- Small electric items and batteries go into a bag next to the boxes
- The brown food waste bin is unchanged
