One of the most important ways in which we can support both community cohesion and Somerset's Net Zero ambitions is to ensure that our towns and villages are connected with accessible footpaths for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users.
Cllr Graham Godwin-Pearson and Jeff Savage are delighted to announce that, if elected as part of a Conservative Council for Somerset, they pledge to secure the funding for a footpath along Cross Lane.
Graham has been trying to resolve the long-running issue of Cross Lane (sometimes known as Coffin Lane) since becoming a district councillor, alongside county councillors Bob Filmer and Nigel Taylor and James Heappey MP.
Graham says, "How can we expect people to use their cars less if there aren't safe routes to walk or cycle between our communities?
"A proper footpath between Axbridge and Cross will ensure that people can make this journey in safety and will encourage more walking and cycling between the town and village. No longer will we see quarry lorries bearing down on double buggies on the narrow hill.
"There are, however, land ownership issues to resolve - and this may take some time - but the money will be there to complete the job at the earliest opportunity."
There is currently a public right of way between Axbridge and Cross, but it runs through two fields that many people find hard to traverse.
The A38 crossing was recently formalised, thanks to Somerset's small improvements grant scheme and the junction is likely to be remodelled in the future to offset the crossroads, improving safety still further.
